Radioactivity in scrap metal

Since the 30’ an incredible amount of radioactive sources and substances has been placed on the market in a uncontrolled and inadequate way.

Although some inspections were inserted over time and despite the efforts of international agencies, a conspicuous amount of sources is still located on the territory putting at risk whoever may get in contact with them, as reported by numerous accidents some of them on the italian territory.

The european legislation and national regulation call for precise and binding obligations for scrap metal collection in order to intercept potential orphan sources and to neutralize risks of uncontrolled exposure.

As a consequence of the abundance of technology and procedures used by radioactive sources and due to the fact that some of these sources have been abandoned through the years lots of radioactive devices are unlawfully scattered on the territory. Those sources, called orphans in order to stress out their condition, may represent a serious risk in case of uncontrolled handling.

The experts from Radiation and Robotic have been working in the steel plant, foundry and collection centre for over 30 years ensuring safety and protection from those risks.

The probability of finding a radioactive source between scrap and waste is far from remote, as the chronicles of recent years demonstrate.
An effective control system and rigorous verification protocols guarantee against exposure and contamination risk and heavy economic consequences.
